The Medical Federation of Peru called the strike after meeting with the Prime Minister, Yehude Simon. Emergency only at hospitals. Health minister has told doctors they will not be paid when they are on strike.
Doctors in Peru's salary has decreased by a quarter since 1976. Average salary in Lima $670 a year, Physicians often have two jobs. Peru can expect a medical brain drain. 38 percent of interns want to practice in a developing country because of this.
