Dec. 5, 09 Contract expires in March 2011, wave of sick days, reportedly almost 1,110 in a two-week period. Transpo started denying vacation and other leave to drivers.

9, October, 2009, Here it is the ruling..
The ruling also provides:

    * Wage increases of 3.25 per cent in 2008, 2.5 per cent in 2009 and 2.5 per cent in 2010, with no signing bonus.
    * No additional sick days or special leave.
    * No major changes to contracting out.

The arbitrator's ruling will be incorporated into a three-year collective agreement set to expire in March 2011. Employer has the right to control scheduling.


August, 09 OC Transpo drivers, mechanics and dispatchers will vote on the agreement on September 24th.  Deal from last winter gave up the union’s powerful right to strike, in favour of sending outstanding disagreements to binding arbitration. Union president Andre Cornellier won re-election by the hair on his chinny chin, chin, with just over 70 votes.

10 April, 09 Friday, That's it it's official strike ended yesterday.  
The strike resulted in delaying a 7.5 percent fare hike to July from April to rebuild ridership. The Council also approved the release of an extra $31,000 for 27,000 tickets for distribution to community resource centers.  That's it. Amen.

3/20/2009 Federal arbitrator Brian Keller made recommendations to end the current dispute and both sides agreed Friday. They also said they agreed not to disclose the terms or any other information relating to future arbitration.

3/19/2009 All parties including mediators will meet up today and tomorrow, they still haven’t fixed the scheduling problem. (Winter starts, 21 December, 2009, make sure you have some new winter boots. I'm sure they are kaput from walking the 53 days of last winters strike)

2/19/09 President Obama arrived today. Good job the buses are working now.  He may have needed a ride.

1/29/09 Stalemate,Federal Labour Minister Rona Ambrose announced outside the House of Commons yesterday that the Conservative goverment plans to introduce back-to-work legislation tomorrow night.  If passed Union will be given 5 days to come up with a mutual arbitrator,  Government has powers to order drivers back to workas from now!

1/25/09 Sunday,  Ottawa City council met in closed doors Saturday to offer striking union workers something?  Remember, it's a secret. Rumors ripe.. ie changes by city, substantial, perhaps federal government involved, safety issues.. MP Mr. Baird change rules, with strike of a pen. etc. etc.

1/23/09 Friday evening,  informal talks break down.

Ecopass users will get refund for December.  Details to be worked out.

1/21/2009 OCTranspo buses have been sitting in this harsh weather since 12/5/2008. City has asked union if mechanics can go in and start maintenance on the vehicles ie:- oil changes, dead batteries to be charged, inspections, warranties voided, ouch! This will delay drivers getting back to work.  That is, if ever this strike ends. Residents should expect to pay an enormous tax bill.

1/20/2009 Started on 9 January, a $200,000 fund for people in hardship because of OCTranspo strike has run out. City manager Kent Kirkpatrick “If you are in difficulty and you believe you qualify for assistance, even if you are not sure about that, call 311,” he said.

Day 40 Sunday,18 January, 2009 the city of Ottawa sent the ball back to the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279 yesterday.  Which they promptly turned down and accused the city of terror tactics.

OC Transpo, Saturday, 17 January, 2009 strike in city's hands. Mayor Larry O'Brien met in emergency closed meeting last night at 9pm to consider offer from union to take  everything from the table except for scheduling, rest would go to binding arbitration.

Tuesday, 13 January, 2009 Mayor mayor to delay yearly speech to the council till OC Transpo is over transit strike is over.  

Monday, 12 January, 2009 City of Ottawa meets with mediator.
Some interesting facts out today about this transit strike. City is saving three million a day. Losers malls on the bus route, suburbs survived due to customers traditionally use cars to get there. Business lost the boost in sales for the Boxing day sale, estimated at $20 million. Ottawa lost 4,000 jobs. 8 million a day lost in daily sales, reduced productivity and wages. 

Friday, 9 January, 2009 Ottawa drivers voted to continue with strike yesterday. 64.4 per cent voted no. No surprise after being told you have to do a vote. Looks like bus service is going to be considered an essential service by the Canadian Industrial Board.  If so they will force members to get on the buses.  Who would be surprised if the mayor fires the lot of them?

5 January, 08. Monday, at last action taking place.  2,300 met today for a meeting at St. Elias Cathedral to discuss agreement the city is offering drivers, mechanics and dispatchers.  Union head Andre Cornellier tells over flowing members not to agree to the vote as this will effect them for the next 20 years.  

2 Jan 09 Tuesday,OC Transpo, Canadian government ordered union to vote on January 10. Will the drivers be desperate to get back to work? Are the wife and kids getting to them!  General public seems to be getting along well without them.

12/31/08 New Years eve, Wednesday, so far government has not stepped in.  No OC Transpo, public transport for new years eve.

12/30/08 Tuesday, Council meeting this is what they came up with. To investigate some options:-
Allowing commuters to use the Transitway for the duration of the strike. Installing more signs directing motorists to designated car pool sites.Creating additional off-street parking. Enhancing the city’s taxi service and provide chits to resource centers and social service agencies to assist Ottawa’s most vulnerable citizens, for instance seniors who need a ride to visit their doctors.Providing free parking for car poolers. Lowering parking rates, both metered and off-street. Creating additional no-stopping restrictions. Emergency funding of community social service agencies. Introducing measures to assist pedestrian and cyclists.

12/29/08 Monday 20th day. Here we are a week later, still going on.  Government threatening to force a vote among transit union workers.  Scheduling is the problem still, union refuses to negotiate with it on the table.  Out of the 2,300 workers only 300 affected by this.

12/28/08 Severe winds, 100 kilometre-per-hour gusts toppled trees, overturned cars and downed power lines across the province. Power out for 2-3days in some parts. Unseasonable high of 10!

Friday, 19 December, 08 closed-door meeting Friday.  Last offer for OC Transpo 7.25 per cent pay increase over three years, $2,500 one-time bonus for each worker. Guarantee of a seven hour minimum shift. Mandatory breaks of eight hours between shifts. An extra two days sick leave.

Thursday, 18 December, Canadian Public Works Union has made a tentative agreement, now it's ATU's turn. Some people finding it convenient to park all day and  pay the  $45.
City increased ticketing down town at request of store owners, regular customs can’t park, so sales are even more down.  Hungarian trains have been on strike this week and will work over the Christmas holiday.  Perhaps OC Transpo could offer that as a gift to Ottawa citizens?

8th day.  Wednesday, 17/12/08  Councillor Mr.Clive Doucet calling for arbitrator. 3" snow.  

Tuesday, 16/12/08  Must be grating on people's nerves by now, passengers and drivers alike. Most hated man in Ottawa is Andre Cornellier!  These leaders should talk to Pittsburgh Port Authority,who just sealed up a very testy situation.  All parties had a happy ending.

Friday 12/12/08 Mayor Larry O’Brien, of Ottawa is asking the president of Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 279, Andre Cornellier, to let his members vote in private and urging residents to car pool. Union not happy with the idea that the bus company are refusing to take scheduling out of the contract.  


Thursday, 11 December, 08 Christmas Kettle Campaign organizers, 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Need drivers to bring volunteers into city and back.  No giving in either side.
How are 350,000 bus riders going to find alternative transportation?  Can taxi cab companies handle this?

Wednesday, 10 December 08, Public Transportation nightmare.  Passengers annoyed

Only, Wednesday, first day 12/10/08  Yep, 30cm of snow, parking spaces gone by 7am.  Traffic congested streets. Stay in hotel tonight, charge the office.  Car pool.  Not a good way to treat your customers.

12/8/08   Still in talks today and tomorrow for possible OC Transpo strike this Wednesday night.
Note to self: Bring cot to sleep in to work.

12/5/08 Bus strike, possible strike ,by OC Transpo, Ottawa, Ontario, Wednesday, 10 December.08.  May start as early as Tuesday midnight if negotiations fail.  Deadlock between OC Transpo and local government.  98% drivers in favor of industrial action. Negotiators will meet Sunday December, 7.   Mayor Larry O'Brien taking measures such as making some roads one-way in anticipation of more residents on the road. Para Transpo service will continue as usual, it may take longer due to the increase in traffic congestion

Parking at premium.You will be able to park all day where one, two and three-hour parking is currently permitted. You will not be able to park where stopping and parking are prohibited. The bus lanes on Albert and Slater Streets, Mackenzie King Bridge, Montreal Rd., Rideau St. (east of King Edward) and Woodroffe Ave. will be open to public use at all times. Some locations for  park and ride 

The O-Train service will  experience the same disruption as OC Transpo buses.    Daily transit users.
