2/18/09 Gabon, Health service employees have been on strike since January 12, 2009.  Governement bringing in security for non striking workers.

It has offered to raise the minimum wage across the board from 44 000 to 80 000 CFA francs a month, the transport allowance from 26 to 35 euros and the annual school fees allocation from 38 to 95 euros.

Earlier in February, the public health sector union SYNAPS reiterated that it sought a monthly wage for hospital workers of 200 000 CFA francs, together with a "motivation bonus" of 60 000 to 80 000 CFA francs.

Gabon is among the wealthiest countries in sub-Saharan Africa with a per capita income of more than $6,000 as of 2007, according to the World Bank.  Oil and timber-rich nation of 1.4 million, where the risk of infectious disease is very high and 8.1 percent of adults live with HIV. 

In private clinics a consultation can cost up to US$40, or about one-tenth of a civil servant's monthly salary, while in public facilities consultations are free for students and retirees and about $6 for others.
