Italian truck strike, Italian lorry strike, starting Wednesday, 9,10,11,12,13, December,2009. Expect blockading at major ports and borders. Severe traffic jams at all borders. International truckers will not make it in and out of Italy. Be prepared to sit idle, stock up with food and water and bring a book. Thousands of trucks will block main arteries. Ferry services and buses will be idle by day three. French truck strike, picks up where this one ends, starting Sunday 9:30pm. Perhaps you may squeeze by the borders.

Last time:-
December, 2007 Italian truck strike caused shortages of basic essentials, food, fuel and medicine across the country. Strike was over in three days, never went all five days and still caused huge disruptions country wide. In the cities gas stations closed and people suffered shortages of vegetables and dairy. Hospitals and pharmacies were allowed delivery of drugs and fuel.
150,000 trucking companies took part in the strike, leaving 600,000 trucks idle. If it had gone on for the whole five days estimates are that the economy would have lost 2.5 billion euros ($3.7 billion). Some truck drivers refused to take part and were beaten by fellow drivers!
Shops felt a decline in Christmas sales.
Rome, two hour lines for gas. Vatican City rationed gas, employees only allowed to buy 20 euros worth. Taxi's in Rome had a tough time filling up. Trash had started to build up on streets across the country. Fiat had to layoff employees temporarily. Highways blocked, food rotted. Vital essential services worried, ambulances, air transport, trucks for school lunches. Small shops supplied by small trucks had stocks and turned a profit!

6/25/08 Italy, Truckers To Resume Talks Wed As Strike Looms
The Italian government and the country's associations representing truckers threatening to go on strike next week will resume talks Wednesday as they couldn't reach an agreement late Tuesday. Italian truckers have called a five-day strike starting next Monday to protest high fuel prices.
The government is willing to award funds for EUR300 million to the sector to alleviate the pressure of higher fuel costs, but the unions are asking for an additional EUR240 million, the paper adds. fxstreet.com
